Read ArticleLook behind the curtain at the coordination, music and patient practice that keep traditional puppet performance connected to communities in southern Fujian.

A puppet can appear effortless once it reaches the stage. A turn of the head, a lifted sleeve or a sudden pause creates character in seconds. Behind that small movement are practiced hands, musical cues, voice, timing and knowledge passed through repeated performance.
Traditional puppetry in southern Fujian includes different forms and local practices. Rather than treating them as interchangeable, visitors should pay attention to how a particular performance is presented. Musicians, manipulators and vocal performers may work together even when the audience sees only the figure.
The story can still be engaging when language is unfamiliar. Gesture, rhythm and changes in pace provide another way to follow the action.
Control develops over years. Fine movement requires strength and precision, while larger gestures must remain readable from a distance. Performers also learn repertoire, music and the expectations of different audiences.
