Đọc bài viếtExplore the textures, courtyards and family history behind the red-brick houses that give southern Fujian villages and old streets their character.

Across southern Fujian, red-brick walls appear beside temple courtyards, village lanes and older city streets. Some houses have sweeping rooflines and carved details; others are modest buildings whose beauty comes from weathered brick, stone bases and the pattern of daily use. Together they form one of the region’s most recognizable architectural languages.
The warm walls are not simply a decorative choice applied to a modern surface. Brick sizes, laying patterns, pale stone frames and roof details create texture that changes with rain and sunlight. A house may reveal repair work from several periods, showing how families adapted rather than rebuilding from nothing.
Decorative elements can carry wishes for prosperity, learning or family continuity, but meanings vary. Visitors should be cautious about assigning a single interpretation without local knowledge.
Many traditional homes organize rooms around internal or semi-enclosed spaces. Courtyards bring daylight, support household work and mediate between the street and private rooms. The threshold matters: an open gate does not automatically make a home public.
Some buildings have become museums, guesthouses or cultural venues. Others remain private or stand partly unused as family structures change. Restoration can protect craftsmanship, but it can also make a district feel detached from ordinary life if residents are pushed out.
Red-brick architecture appears in and around Quanzhou, Xiamen and neighboring parts of the Minnan cultural region. The best encounters are often on a slower walk between major sites. Look along side lanes, behind newer shopfronts and at the relationship between houses and temples.
Do not enter abandoned-looking property without permission. Old floors and roofs may be unsafe, and ownership remains even when a building seems quiet.
These houses hold memory without needing to tell a single neat story. Weather, repair, family movement and neighborhood change are written into the material. A patient visitor can read some of those layers while accepting that the most personal meanings belong to the people connected to the home.
